The Canoe Builder — Mālama Waʻa

From tree to ocean, the waʻa begins in the hands of those who carry the knowledge to shape it.

The Canoe Builder honors the skill, patience, and ʻike behind the Hawaiian tradition of building and caring for the waʻa. More than a vessel, the waʻa represents connection—to our kūpuna, to the moana, to ʻāina, and to one another.

Every carve, every lashing, and every carefully shaped piece reflects knowledge passed from generation to generation. The canoe builder doesn't simply create something that travels across the ocean; those hands help carry people, stories, traditions, and identity forward.

At the heart of this design are the words:

“Kūkulu i ka waʻa, kūkulu i ka lāhui.”
Build the canoe, build the nation.

It speaks to something greater than the vessel itself: when we preserve knowledge, teach the next generation, and work together with purpose, we strengthen the lāhui.

Printed on a soft Allmade Tri-Blend shirt, each shirt incorporates material made from six recycled plastic bottles, combining cultural storytelling with a more thoughtful choice for our environment.
