The Kapa Maker — Hana Kapa

From the bark of the wauke comes something created with patience, skill, and generations of ʻike.

The Kapa Maker honors the traditional Hawaiian art of hana kapa—the careful process of transforming wauke into kapa through knowledge, craftsmanship, and repeated beating and working of the fibers. Kapa was created for clothing, blankets, adornment, ceremony, and many other parts of Hawaiian life.

At the heart of this design is the ʻōlelo noʻeau “Ma ka hana ka ʻike” — “In doing, one learns.” It reflects the knowledge carried through practice: hands learning from hands, generation after generation.

Surrounded by wauke, traditional tools, kapa patterns, and the beauty of Hawaiʻi, this piece celebrates the patience and ʻike of those who keep this cultural practice alive.
